Redact private details before sharing

Screenshots and photos often contain more information than you intend to publish: faces, addresses, license plates, account numbers, emails, order IDs, map locations or private chat messages. This blur redact tool lets you hide a selected rectangle before you share the image. Draw over the sensitive area, choose pixelation or blur, apply the effect and download a new redacted PNG while your original file remains unchanged.

The redaction happens entirely in the browser with canvas. The image is never uploaded, and the selected region is modified locally on a copy of the pixels. That makes the tool practical for support screenshots, bug reports, documentation, social posts and quick reviews where privacy matters. You can apply the effect multiple times to cover several separate areas before saving the final copy.

Blur versus pixelation

Blur gives a softer, cleaner look and is useful when you want the image to feel polished. Strong pixelation is often better for privacy because it replaces detail with large blocks of color. A tiny blur or very small pixel size can sometimes leave recognizable shapes, especially around text, numbers or faces. When the information is genuinely sensitive, choose pixelation, increase the strength and inspect the downloaded image at full size before sharing.

Redaction best practices

Always redact a little more than the exact text or object, because shadows, reflections and surrounding context can still reveal information. For documents and screenshots, cover labels as well as values if the label itself is sensitive. Keep your original image private, and share only the exported copy. If you need irreversible removal for legal, financial or regulated material, use a dedicated document redaction workflow; this tool is designed for quick image privacy in the browser.

How the selection and export work

Drag on the preview to draw a rectangle, choose Pixelate or Heavy blur, set the strength (from 6 to 36) and press Apply to selected area. Repeat for each region you need to hide, then download the result. The export is always a PNG, so no extra JPG compression is added around the edited area. Because the image is re-drawn on a canvas, the original file’s embedded metadata is not copied into the new file.

After applying an effect, zoom in on the downloaded file and check that the text or face can no longer be read. If it can, redo it with a stronger setting.

Frequently asked questions

Does this permanently remove the hidden detail?
The downloaded image has the selected pixels blurred or pixelated. Keep the original private and share only the redacted copy.
Are images uploaded for redaction?
No. Selection, blur, pixelation and export all happen locally in your browser.
Is blur or pixelation safer?
Pixelation with a large block size is usually stronger for privacy. Blur is better when you want a softer visual style.
Can I redact more than one area?
Yes. Apply one area, then draw another rectangle and apply again before downloading.
