Convert JPG to PNG in your browser

PNG is a lossless image format, which makes it the right choice when you need crisp edges, sharp text or a transparent background. Converting a JPG to PNG is useful when you want to edit an image repeatedly without compounding JPG compression artifacts, or when a tool or platform specifically requires PNG.

This converter decodes your JPG, paints it onto an HTML canvas and re-encodes it as a PNG — all locally in your browser. Your photo never touches a server, so the process is instant and completely private, even for sensitive documents or screenshots.

When to convert JPG to PNG

Reach for PNG when you plan to overlay graphics, add text, or keep re-saving an image during editing — PNG won't degrade with each save the way JPG does. It's also the format of choice for logos, icons, diagrams and UI screenshots. For final photographs that you simply want to share or upload, JPG usually remains the smaller, more convenient option.

What to expect from the result

Converting to PNG does not restore detail that JPG compression has already discarded; the existing artifacts are preserved exactly, but no new ones are added on later saves. The image keeps its original width and height. Photographs saved as PNG are typically several times larger than the JPG, because lossless compression cannot shrink natural images as much. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG will be fully opaque; if you need a transparent background, you will have to remove the background in a separate editing step.

Batch conversion

You can drop several JPG or JPEG files at once. They are converted one after another and each PNG is downloaded with the same base name as the original. Your browser may ask for permission to download multiple files. For a very large number of big photos, convert in smaller batches to keep the page responsive and memory use low.

Quality, metadata and privacy

The PNG is built from the pixels your browser decodes, so embedded camera metadata such as location is not copied into the new file. The process uses only your own device and memory, which is why even confidential scans or IDs can be converted without any upload.

After converting, you can open the PNG in any editor, add text or shapes, and save as often as you like without further quality loss. Keep the original JPG if you might need the smaller file later.

Frequently asked questions

Does JPG to PNG improve quality?
No — JPG already discarded some data when it was saved. Converting to PNG stops further quality loss and gives you a lossless file, but it can't recover detail the JPG lost.
Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless, so for photographs it's usually larger than the equivalent JPG. PNG wins for graphics, screenshots and images needing transparency.
Is the conversion private?
Yes. Everything happens in your browser via the canvas API — your image is never uploaded.
