Convert JFIF to JPG in your browser

You saved an image from the web or a messaging app and ended up with a file ending in .jfif. It opens on your computer, but the upload form, online store or document editor refuses it. This tool turns JFIF into JPG in seconds, so the file works everywhere a normal photo is expected.

JFIF stands for JPEG File Interchange Format. It is a thin wrapper around ordinary JPEG-compressed pixels, which means the picture itself is already a JPEG. Only the extension and a small header differ, and some browsers, especially older versions of Edge and Chrome on Windows, save images this way. Many services check the extension and reject anything that is not .jpg or .jpeg.

How the conversion works

The tool reads the first bytes of each file to confirm it contains JPEG data, then saves those exact bytes under a .jpg name. Nothing is decoded or re-compressed, so the result is pixel-for-pixel identical to the source, EXIF metadata is preserved and even large batches finish instantly. Everything happens on your device, so private photos, scans and ID documents are never sent to a server. Several files can be processed at once, and each download keeps the original name with a .jpg extension.

If you drop a file that is not really a JPEG, such as a PNG or WebP, it is redrawn on a canvas and encoded as JPG instead. Only then do the quality slider (10–100, default 92%) and the background colour apply: JPEG has no transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the chosen colour. White is the default and suits most documents.

JFIF vs JPG β€” what is the difference?

In practice, nothing you can see. Both use the same lossy compression and the same colour handling, and almost every viewer opens either. The practical difference is compatibility: .jpg is accepted by social networks, email clients, CMS platforms, job portals and printing services, while .jfif is sometimes blocked or shown as an unknown file type. Because this converter copies the JPEG data unchanged, you can convert the same file as often as you like without any generation loss.

If you need other formats, you can also convert JPG to PNG or convert images to WebP for smaller web files.

How to use

  1. Add JFIF filesDrag your .jfif images onto the box or click to browse.
  2. Convert losslesslyJFIF files are saved as JPG without re-encoding; the quality slider only affects other formats.

Frequently asked questions

What is a JFIF file?
JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is a container for JPEG-compressed image data. A .jfif file is essentially a JPEG, but many apps, websites and forms only recognise the .jpg and .jpeg extensions.
Is it safe to convert JFIF to JPG here?
Yes. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the HTML canvas. Your image is never uploaded to any server.
Will I lose quality?
No. A JFIF file already contains JPEG data, so the tool copies the original bytes into a .jpg file without re-encoding: zero quality loss, and EXIF metadata is kept. The quality slider only applies to other formats (PNG, WebP…) that have to be re-encoded.
Can I convert several JFIF files at once?
Yes. Select multiple files and each one is converted and downloaded separately as a .jpg file.
