Make a round profile picture

Round avatars look clean and modern, but most photos are rectangular. This tool crops any image into a perfect circle with a transparent background, so it sits neatly on any color and is ready to upload as a profile picture for social media, Slack, forums or a team page.

Everything happens in your browser: your image is drawn onto a square canvas, a circular clip is applied, and the corners are made fully transparent before saving as a PNG. Your photo is never uploaded, so it stays completely private.

Why a transparent PNG matters

If you cropped a circle but kept a white background, you'd see ugly corners on any dark or colored surface. By exporting a transparent PNG, the circle blends seamlessly wherever you place it. For best results, use a roughly square photo with your subject centered — the tool automatically crops to the shorter side.

How the crop is chosen

The circle is taken from the center of your image. The tool finds the shorter side, cuts a square of that size from the middle and applies a circular mask, so a 4000 × 3000 photo becomes a 3000 × 3000 circle. Nothing is resized, which means the output keeps the original pixel quality. There is no drag-to-reposition control, so if your subject is off-center, crop or shift the photo first and then make the circle.

Tips for avatars and profile pictures

  • Leave some space around the face or logo, because the corners of the square are cut away by the circle.
  • Large photos create large PNG files. If a site limits avatar size, resize the circle to something like 512 × 512 pixels afterwards.
  • Some platforms apply their own circular mask and may convert uploads to JPG, which fills transparent areas with a solid color. If that happens, upload the original square image instead.
  • The edge of the circle is smoothed with anti-aliasing, so it looks clean on light and dark backgrounds alike.

The result is always saved as a PNG, because PNG is the common format that supports transparency without lossy compression.

Privacy and quality

The circular PNG is created from pixels decoded in your own browser, so no copy of the photo is sent anywhere, and the original file is never changed. You can preview the result before downloading and repeat the process with another photo as many times as you like.

Frequently asked questions

Will the corners be transparent?
Yes. The area outside the circle is fully transparent, and the result is saved as a PNG so the transparency is preserved.
What if my image isn't square?
The circle is centered and sized to the shorter side, cropping the longer edges equally so your subject stays centered.
Can I use this for a profile picture?
Absolutely — it's perfect for round avatars on social media, forums and team pages.
